Kurt Vonnegut - Breakfast for Champions

Kilgore Trout took a leak in the men's room of the New York City movie house. (...) There was a message written in pencil on the tiles by the roller towel. This was it:

Trout plundered his pockets for a pen or pencil. He had an answer to the question. But he had nothing to write with, not even a burnt match. So he left the question unanswered, but here is what he would have written, if he had found anything to write with:

To be
the eyes
and ears
and conscience
of the Creator of the Universe,
you fool.

***

What was the apple which Eve and Adam ate? It was the Creator of the Universe. And so on. Symbols can be so beautiful, sometimes.

  1. That's it. The purpose of life is to be. To live.

Everyone is so very concerned about finding a purpose to life. Finding passion. Finding positive thinking. And so on.

It's interesting to look at why we are constantly searching for purpose. It's the same reason that we seek anything. With purpose, we are positive, energized, clear, we get up and go in the morning, we know what to do, what to decide, what to say...

So we're not looking for purpose, we are looking to be easier. We are looking for how to just be. We think an external purpose will do it for us.

But what does it is to discover again how to just be. And in this natural way of being, when we are easy with life, purpose is sometimes invited.

    Good article,thanks.

  2. If you just stop looking, and start being, there is no need for a purpose at all.

    Many hugs, Kaushik!

"And I AM is the first person singular of the verb TO BE. And you think it's two completely different words."
